MARCUS WRIGHT

Marcus talks about how he was bullied in high school and at home for being different, pushing him further and further down into a deep cycle of depression. He attempted suicide on more than one occasion. After the support of his counsellor and a visit to his GP he knew he had to change, so he started volunteering and helping others which lit a fire inside of him. After a few years he managed to come to terms with his own sexuality at age 25, when he says he really breathed for the first time, which was difficult as he was reluctant to prove the bullies right. He is now flourishing and supports parents and young people of the LGBTQIA+ community to see things from a new perspective, and to ‘open their eyes just a little bit more’. He wants to help people become Allies. He has currently been nominated for a National Diversity Award in the Role Model of the year category. The subjects we touch on are difficult and may be hard for some to listen to.

KEY LEARNS

“So if you imagine being in high school and growing up and living in that fortress environment, I was holding my breath. And it wasn’t until 25 years old, that I could breathe. And that first breath was like a massive weight had just lifted off my shoulders.”

“They liked me for being me. They liked me, because of the heart that I had. And it was at that point, when I could finally breathe. That’s when I felt safe.”

“I truly believe that sexuality isn’t always just set in stone, I do believe that sometimes sexuality can be fluid, just like gender can be fluid” “I’m not trying to eradicate the I and A . The reason I say LGBTQ+  is because a lot of people within the LGBTQ plus community will just identify as queer, which is the key. So they’ll just identify as queer because the queer then is any part of the LGBTQ plus community and doesn’t necessarily need that specific label”

“We were discussing before about being an ally, and if you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything” ABOUT MARCUS After growing up in a broken home, bullied in high school for being different pushing him into a deep depression and attempted suicide, Marcus managed to turn his life around and “break the cycle”.

Marcus has since volunteered within his community to make a safer place for all – focusing on educating people on the struggles of others, minorities, and how we can all do more when it comes to looking after the mental health of others. He won the Pride of Preston award in 2019.
